THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY AND HEALING

PART 107: HOW THE SICK BENEFIT FROM RELIGION

In the name of Jehovah God, Master of the universe, Ruler of the earth.

As the days of life roll on the righteous know of an eternal resting place. However as they pass through this foreign land there is Peace and Joy. Peace and Joy is seen in the hearts and minds of the righteous that know God. Therefore the sick are rendered comfort and the weak are given strength.

It is for sure that the believers are well aware of the great benefits the sick receive from religion. However the medical community and those that have heard about (but don't know God) God are still grappling for answers.

Andrea Neal chief editorial writer for the Indianapolis Star in an article taken from the Saturday Evening Post March/April 1998 entitled "The Benefits of Religious Practice," adds to our discussion. Neal reveals that political discussions regarding medicine and religion are greatly benefited by qualified and factual studies of religion and medicine.

Dr. Harold Koenig is the Director of Duke's Center for the study of Religion/Spirituality and Health. In the October (1998) International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine it is reported that those who attend weekly religious services have healthier immune systems.

This was the 1st study that found an association between religious activity and immune functioning. The blood levels of Interleukin 6 (IL6) and other substances that regulate immune and inflammatory responses were lower in those that practice a religion.

While many studies have been clouded in mystery as to faith unseen the study of immune functioning influence political discussions regarding the role of religion in public life. Here we see questions regarding moral behavior impacted by religion. The question of fidelity in marriage and martial stability is also affected by one's religious beliefs.

Hence this survey as a means to test these questions gains prominence we see the results of faith. "John Hopkins University researchers have found that cardiovascular disease is significantly reduced by a life-time of church attendance. Blood pressure is reduced an average 5mm by regular church attendance. Religious involvement decreases drug use and promotes self control for all age groups. Economics is also noted to be affected by religion."

Andrea Neal argues further: "With such data available, it's hard to understand why government officials shy away from public policies that give religion a prominent role."

Meanwhile questions centered on the "separation of church and state" are raised. Also, there are concerns regarding the so-called Christian right. Thus much of the conservative thinking is advocated by people who also claim to know God. For the record the FreedomJournal reveals that some know God and some do not. However, who will benefit the lost and render positive decisions for the public good? Will it be the Flaming Liberals with no morals who hate God and God's people? Will right-wing conservatives that take the Bible and distort the true messages of God stand up for God and for God's people? Well are all Liberals ungodly and are there any Godly among the conservatives?

It is for sure that if more people would attend the church of their choice we would have fewer problems. For example many crimes, divorce, un-wed pregnancy and drug addiction would be reduced. Also, various health problems would be at a minimum.
